Education Savings Account
Alabama
The CHOOSE Act
Checked 18 September 2026
How it works
Signed into law in March 2024, the CHOOSE Act creates refundable income-tax credits — called education savings accounts — for K-12 students in Alabama. The Department of Revenue runs the programme; approved funds sit in a ClassWallet account, and families pay approved Education Service Providers directly from it.

How to apply
- Confirm your child is eligible for this year — see "Who qualifies" above.
- Check this year's window. The 2026-27 window is closed. Renewals opened 15 December 2025, new applications opened 2 January 2026, and both closed 31 March 2026; award emails began 15 April 2026. The 2027-28 dates had not been announced when we checked on 18 September 2026 — last cycle opened in December and January, so watch the state page from late autumn. Dates move every year, so confirm on the official page before you plan around them.
- Create a parent account on the official portal and start the application.
- Have your documents ready. Most programmes want proof of residency, the child's birth certificate, and an IEP or eligibility determination if the programme is disability-based.
- Once you're approved, spend it. Spending runs through approved Education Service Providers in ClassWallet — search the ClassWallet marketplace for Historical Conquest.
Official programme page: revenue.alabama.gov/tax-policy/the-choose-act. Amounts, deadlines and eligibility are set by the state and change every year — always confirm there before you plan around them.
